Olympiacos sign free agent Marcelo on a one year deal

(Football news) After 15 years at Real Madrid, Marcelo left the club this year. The 34 year old was out of contract and Los Blancos didn't offer him a new deal. The Brazilian was linked with a few clubs including Marseille and Leicester City but now he has officially signed for Olympiacos on a one year deal. The Greek Club will be playing in the Europa League this season which will be the first time that Marcelo will not be playing in the Champions League since 2007. It will be a big challenge for Marcelo to change clubs at this point of his career. Olympiacos have won only 1 of their 8 games this season while 6 have been draws. The Greek Club will be hoping that Marcelo can bring his experience and quality to influence the team.

Marcelo had an incredible career at Real Madrid as he became their most decorated player with 25 collective trophies. He was also a part of the UEFA Team of the Year 3 times and the FIFA FIFPro World XI 6 times. In the past 3 years he has been a bench player and has fallen behind the likes of Ferland Mendy, Nacho and David Alaba in the pecking order. The Brazilian's fitness has often let him down but his quality especially in attack was still seen from time to time. If Olympiacos manage to get Marcelo's fitness back and put him in his favored system then it will massively benefit the team. Marcelo always played left back for Los Blancos and Brazil but due to his attacking brilliance and lack of defensive work rate, left wing back is a role which is more suited to his game.

Olympiacos coach Carlos Corberan plays a four man defence but he can make an adjustment for a player of Marcelo's quality. Another option would be to play him further forward on the pitch where he wouldn't have to worry about the defensive side of things. The big question mark is about Marcelo's ambitions for whatever is left in his career. The Brazilian is already 34 years of age and he has already started to do things outside of football. In his prime Marcelo was undoubtedly the best full back in the world but his prime didn't last for as long as his fans wanted. It will be interesting to see how Marcelo goes about things in his new journey.
