Melbourne Renegades vs Perth Scorchers Match Abandoned: Safety Concerns on Unsafe Pitch Impact BBL Fixture

(Cricket News) The Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers Big Bash League match was canceled due to unplayable conditions on the pitch. This was the first time in the league’s history that a match was canceled because of unsafe pitch conditions.

During the Scorchers’ innings, three balls bowled by Renegades Will Sutherland at the same area of the pitch generated different degrees of movement, which beat hitter Josh Inglis every time.

According to Fox Cricket, the batter became enraged and could be heard mouthing, “this is a joke.” The umpires then stopped play and, after a 20-minute delay, declared that the condition of the pitch was unsafe to continue.

A few balls are getting in there, so they are obviously a little bit concerned about that, said Renegades captain Aaron Finch. “I did not hear anything that the umps were saying but obviously they are concerned with how the balls are bouncing from that wet patch here. It is on that good length. It is six to seven meter length,” Finch said as the umpires called an audible.

You do not want to wait for someone to get seriously injured before saying, “We did think it was unsafe.” I would not say it is unsafe, but it is slightly on the dangerous side. If you are looking at player safety and you are waiting for something to happen and someone to get hit, that is the wrong attitude,” he continued.

“It is been tapped in but it is just taking some big divots out of the surface there as well. You can see that one that Josh Inglis got right there; it is gripped the seam and it is bouncing ridiculously. If that is on line with someone is body or their head then that could be some real issues.”
