Nehra fined for code breach; Hardik penalised again for slow over-rate

Gujarat Titans (GT) head coach Ashish Nehra and Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya have both been penalised following their rain-affected IPL 2025 clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday night.

Nehra was fined 25% of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching Article 2.20 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to “conduct contrary to the spirit of the game.” Though the IPL did not specify the exact nature of the incident, Nehra was seen animatedly urging umpires to resume play during the final rain delay in the stop-start second half of the match. He is only the second coach to receive a demerit point this season, following Munaf Patel of Delhi Capitals.

Meanwhile, MI skipper Hardik Pandya and his playing group, including substitute Karn Sharma, were fined for maintaining a slow over-rate for the second time this season. Hardik was docked INR 24 lakh, while each of his teammates was fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lower.

During the final over of GT’s successful chase — delayed multiple times due to rain — MI were forced to bring an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle as a standard in-game penalty. GT went on to win off the last delivery, chasing 15 runs in that over bowled by Deepak Chahar.

Hardik now joins several other captains penalised for similar over-rate offences this season, including Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, Sanju Samson, Rajat Patidar, and Riyan Parag.
