Usman Khawaja Passes Concussion Test Following Bouncer Impact

Shamar Joseph hit Usman Khawaja with a nasty bouncer when Australia needed only one run to win.

(Cricket News) Usman Khawaja was hit on the right side of his jaw by a ball that brushed across his chest as he attempted to turn his head away from Shamar Joseph’s blow to his head with just one run remaining in Australia’s 10-wicket victory over the West Indies in Adelaide. The ball was examined by a medical professional on the field before Khawaja retired hurt. Khawaja had been cleared of a concussion and a fractured jaw initially.

He was sent for a scan to make sure there was no structural damage to his jaw, and Cricket Australia later confirmed that the scans came back clear. He passed the first concussion test in the dressing room, and he will need to pass another one on Saturday in order to be cleared to play in the second Test in Brisbane, which begins on January 25. If he fails, he will enter a concussion protocol period that could last anywhere from five to eight days, making him highly unlikely to play.

Khawaja was hit in the head on the one day that Australia did not have a backup batter on the field. Last night, Australia’s selectors cleared Matt Renshaw to travel to Gold Coast to play in the BBL Qualifier for Brisbane Heat against Sydney Sixers.

This was one of the few occasions in the concussion substitute era of international cricket that Australia did not have a backup batter on hand. “He seems okay,” said Australia captain Pat Cummins after the win. “It is a little bit of a sore jaw. So yeah, [we’ll] monitor it but he seems okay.”

Renshaw had flown with the understanding that he would return on Saturday morning and that he could have made an earlier trip back to Adelaide if something major transpired, but that was not necessary because the game was over.

Renshaw is the next in line to play in Brisbane if Khawaja is not fit, which will impact his availability to play in the other BBL finals should the Heat need him on Monday or Wednesday.
