Rohit Sharma's Participation in 2nd Super Over: Legal Implications and Rules Explained

India’s third and final Twenty20 International match against Afghanistan came down to two Super Overs. But, because of captain Rohit Sharma’s antics at the bat (he scored a record fifth T20I century and important boundaries in both super overs), the hosts won in Bangalore to sweep the series. Still, the Indian captain’s decision to bat first in the second Super Over caused some controversy after the thrilling match.

As the top run scorer for India, Rohit batted with Jaiswal in the first super over. But, before the final ball, when India needed two runs to win, the captain of the country retired himself out to bring in Rinku Singh at the non-striker’s end. When the game entered its second super over, Rohit batted with Rinku Singh once more.

25.4.2 – If a batter retires due to illness, injury, or any other unavoidable cause, that batter is entitled to resume his or her innings. If for any reason this does not happen, that batter is to be recorded as ‘Retired – not out’.

25.4.3 – Should a batter retire for any cause other than those listed in 25.4.2, the opposing captain’s permission is required to continue that hitter’s innings; otherwise, that batter will be marked as “Retired – out.”

IF THE SUPER OVER IS TIED: A batsman who has been dismissed in a prior Super Over will not be allowed to bat in any more Super Overs.

It should be noted that the match officials have not yet clarified whether Rohit was retired out or retired hurt; if it was the latter, he would have been eligible to bat again since he was not out in the first Super Over.

According to the ICC Playing Conditions, in case of a tied Super Over, “Any batsman dismissed in any previous Super Over shall be ineligible to bat in any subsequent Super Over.”
