Fellow British player Kyle Edmund also lost his opening match 6-3 6-2 to Italian sixth seed Jannick Sinner.

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic overcame France’s Constant Lestienne 6-3 6-2, which was his first victory in Australia since being deported last year. Speaking after the match, Djokovic said “For the first match I can’t complain, I played very well. Thank you all for coming out today. Thank you for giving me the welcome that I could only wish for. If I have to pick one country where I’ve had the most success, which treated me in the best way in terms of tennis, it’s here, definitely.”

In other results, Russian player Daniil Medvedev secured a 7-6 (8-6) 2-1 win over Italian Lorenzo Sonego, who retired injured. Medvedev lost the 2021 Australian Open final to Novak Djokovic and was defeated by Rafael Nadal last year.
