Real Madrid Pays Tribute to Pope

On Monday, September 21, Real Madrid recognized the late Pope Francis by holding a minute’s silence in his respect. The beloved pope died at the age of 88.  Pope Francis was a well-known football enthusiast who loved the beautiful game.

“Minute of silence at Ciudad Real Madrid,” the Spanish team posted on social networking site X, along with a picture of the coaching staff and players standing together while they practiced at their field.

Real Madrid released a statement earlier in the day lamenting “the loss of a historic and universal figure.”  As the club noted, “During his pontificate, characterized by his immense legacy, Pope Francis embodied significant spirit of solidarity and support for the less fortunate and vulnerable people.” The statement highlighted the Pope’s profound impact.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, which is coached by Argentine Diego Simeone and has a significant number of Argentine players, both sent their condolences to Pope Francis in a show of solidarity.

A priest established the San Lorenzo club in Buenos Aires in 1908, and Pope Francis was a fervent supporter of the organization.  In the chapel of the club’s sports headquarters, he frequently celebrated the yearly mass commemorating the club’s founding.
