Cheteshwar Pujara believes Virat Kohli’s deep-rooted passion for Test cricket and his unwavering commitment to elevate the format will remain a cornerstone of his legacy. Reflecting on Kohli’s remarkable 14-year Test career in a conversation with ESPNcricinfo, Pujara praised his former teammate’s impact as both a batter and a leader.

“In an era where most youngsters were gravitating toward white-ball cricket, Virat always viewed Test cricket as the ultimate format,” Pujara said. “He worked incredibly hard to succeed in it, and that dedication set him apart.”

Pujara emphasized the cultural shift Kohli ushered in after taking over as full-time captain in 2015, particularly regarding fitness.

“When he began leading the side, he brought a new level of focus on fitness. Other teams were already working on it, but Virat made it a priority for India. That change filtered through the entire squad — even the fast bowlers had to step up. At the same time, he maintained a strong focus on making India a top Test side.”

One of Kohli’s most defining traits as captain, according to Pujara, was his obsession with taking 20 wickets in a Test — the ultimate recipe for victory, even if it meant compromising on batting depth. Pujara recalled missing out on matches, including the first two Tests of the 2015 Sri Lanka tour, due to Kohli’s aggressive team combinations.

“From day one as captain, his goal was always to take 20 wickets. That shaped the team’s intensity in the field. We weren’t just waiting for mistakes — we were creating pressure, playing with purpose. He fostered a mindset where the opposition batters felt like they were under constant threat.”

Pujara cited the 2021 Lord’s Test against England as a prime example of Kohli’s leadership style. Ahead of the final day, Kohli delivered a passionate address, challenging his bowlers to give England “60 overs of hell.” India went on to win by 151 runs, taking a 1-0 series lead in dramatic fashion.

“That was one of the best Test wins I’ve been part of,” Pujara said. “Nobody expected us to pull off that result, especially on such a flat pitch. But it was a brave declaration, backed by great bowling and fearless leadership. That win epitomized Virat’s aggressive and bold approach.”

When asked about his favorite Kohli innings, Pujara picked the gritty century at Perth during the 2018-19 tour of Australia — a fiery pitch, high-stakes contest, and classic Kohli shot-making.

“Even though we lost that game, it was an incredible knock. The pitch offered lateral movement and bounce, yet he played with great control — those straight drives, cover drives, and his improved pull shot stood out. He adjusted beautifully and delivered a brilliant innings under pressure. That’s one of his best that I’ve witnessed firsthand.”
