(Football news) Having thrashed Real Betis 4-1, Manchester United will now shift their attention to the Premier League when they take on Southampton on Sunday. The Saints overcame Leicester City 1-0 but face a tougher test this time around, especially with the Red Devils still hurting from their 7-0 humiliation against Liverpool at Anfield. In-form striker Marcus Rashford scored his 25th goal of the season while the likes of Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Wout Weghorst also found the net against Real Betis.
As things stand, Manchester United are currently 14 points behind Arsenal in the Premier League and chances of winning the league seem slim to none. Fourth place Tottenham Hotspur are four points behind the Red Devils but have played a game more and Erik ten Hag’s side will not be immediately concerned about potentially losing out on a Champions League spot. Manchester United are unbeaten in 20 games at Old Trafford and have scored at least two goals in each of their last 15 games but Southampton can be a tricky opponent on their day.
In team news for Manchester United, Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek are unavailable due to injuries while Anthony Martial is back in the squad but might feature on the bench. Marcel Sabitzer appears to be a doubt due to a knock and didn’t feature against Real Betis and Erik ten Hag is expected to make a few changes. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Tyrell Malacia could both feature in the starting lineup while Bruno Fernandes is expected to keep the captain’s armband with Maguire on the bench. As for Southampton, Alcaraz should be fit enough to start after suffering from a knee sprain against Leicester City but the likes of Valentino Livramento and Juan Larios will be unavailable.
Manchester United possible starting lineup:
De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Martinez, Malacia; Casemiro, Fred; Antony, Fernandes, Rashford; Weghorst
Southampton possible starting lineup:
Bazunu; Maitland-Niles, Bella-Kotchap, Bednarek, Walker-Peters; Ward-Prowse, Lavia; Walcott, Alcaraz, Sulemana; Adams
