Newcastle set to play Burnley in the Premier League

Newcastle will try to maintain the positive vibe when Burnley visits St James' Park on Saturday after defying expectations during a fantastic week of Premier League and EFL Cup
Newcastle

(Football news) Midweek, both teams secured their spots in the EFL Cup’s fourth round after the Clarets easily defeated Salford City with four goals while the Magpies upset Manchester City 1-0. Newcastle United’s tears at having to witness Manchester United hoist the EFL Cup at Wembley in the 2022–23 season’s championship game, but after an incredible third-round victory over the tournament’s defending champions, a chance at retaliation may soon be on the table.

In order to accommodate their teams’ commitments to the Premier League and the Champions League, both Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola made substitutions on Wednesday night. However, in the eighth minute of the second half, Alexander Isak scored the game-winning goal in front of a very raucous home crowd.

Following a rocky start to the season, Newcastle is starting to resemble their former selves and broke numerous records in an 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United last weekend. As compensation for eliminating the treble winners, Newcastle will face Man United in a rematch of last year’s championship game in the fourth round.

Eight different goal scorers scored in Newcastle’s biggest-ever away league triumph and joint-biggest Premier League victory, the most in an English top-flight game since 1992. Howe’s in-form team has moved up to ninth in the standings during their four-game unbeaten streak.

A fifth straight clean sheet this weekend would be exactly what Newcastle needs before Kylian Mbappe’s Paris Saint-Germain visit St James’ Park next week. That impressive run also includes a creditable goalless draw away to AC Milan in the Champions League.

Burnley’s odds of completing a Premier League victory as convincing as Newcastle’s eight-goal thrashing of Sheffield United are remote, but Vincent Kompany’s team at least managed to outperform the Magpies in terms of goal production during their midweek EFL Cup victory over Salford City.

An excellent night for Anass Zaroury, who assisted three of the Clarets’ four goals at the Peninsula Stadium, saw Sander Berge, Jacob Bruun Larsen, Dara O’Shea, and Wilson Odobert put the game to bed before the half-hour mark. Wilson Odobert then joined the fun in the closing minutes.

Burnley will now play Everton in an all-Premier League matchup in the fourth round. However, EFL Cup victories are of little comfort given Burnley’s dismal Premier League start, as the Clarets have only taken one point out of a possible 18 and are only ahead of Sheffield United in the standings as a result of Newcastle’s eight-goal demolition of the Blades.

Last weekend against Manchester United, Kompany’s team played admirably, but they were defeated 1-0 by a spectacular Bruno Fernandes goal, and they lost both of their matches against Newcastle in the 2021–22 Premier League season.

Even though Burnley is currently unable to earn a point at Turf Moor, they are still unbeaten away from home this year and haven’t suffered a loss there since Man City humiliated them 6-0 in the FA Cup six months ago. Kompany’s team could use some inspiration from Newcastle this weekend in order to prepare for future meetings with the treble winners.
