According to Habertürk, José Mourinho, the head coach of Fenerbahçe, may soon be named manager of the Portuguese national team.
According to reports, the 62-year-old strategist and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) have struck an initial agreement. He might take over as manager of the national team immediately following the June UEFA Nations League finals.
Yesterday Selim Kul, the editor-in-chief of HT Spor, gave details concerning the first arrangement between Mourinho and the FPF.
Since Mourinho’s current contract with Fenerbahçe expires in 2026, the original idea was for him to sign a contract beginning in that year. But the Ronaldo factor—an unforeseen development—changed the Federation’s position,” Kul added.
It is acknowledged that handling Ronaldo’s status with the national team has grown to be a delicate and complicated matter. According to the Portuguese Football Federation, Mourinho is in a unique position to manage the challenge and balance Ronaldo’s presence because of his size and influence. The Federation has accelerated the agreement from 2026 to this summer as a result of this.
The FPF is hesitant to compensate Fenerbahçe for ending Mourinho’s contract early, though. Mourinho is apparently seeking a mutual arrangement with the Turkish club to terminate his present contract as a result.
For background, Roberto Martínez, a Spanish coach, is currently in charge of the Portugal national team.
