In a poignant plea, PSG player Lee Kang-in urged South Korean football supporters to support their national team as they aim to win the 2026 World Cup. This appeal for harmony coincides with a flurry of criticism directed at the Korea Football Association (KFA) and head coach Hong Myung-bo.
There is a hint of discontent among the fans despite South Korea’s winning streak in their qualifying campaign, which is evidence of their skill on the field. Discontent has been sparked by suspicion of Hong’s reappointment and doubts about the KFA’s judgment.
After Jurgen Klinsmann’s contentious exit in 2024, Hong, a legendary character in South Korean football and a former captain, was reinstated as head coach. Many fans are worried about Hong’s comeback through a complicated selection process, despite the fact that his first spell ended brutally with South Korea’s group stage defeat at the 2014 World Cup. There was a noticeable sense of discomfort when some fans jeered him in Seoul, despite the team’s decisive 4-0 victory over Kuwait that guaranteed them a spot in the World Cup.
Lee, who scored a goal in the decisive victory, addressed the dissatisfaction during his post-match interview. “There are people out there attacking and criticising our head coach and the KFA,” he told me. “But since we players are also part of the federation and the coach is our boss, people’s criticism also affects us if they get out of hand.”
He went on, “I’d like to encourage people to see the brighter side of our squad. This will help us play better in the World Cup. I hope people would continue to aid and support us.
Under Hong’s guidance, South Korea had six victories and four ties in their previous ten games. Nonetheless, the performances have not always been impressive. With captain Son Heung-min dealing with ailments and form concerns, the team worked hard to qualify, drawing 1-1 against Jordan, Oman, and Palestine earlier this year.
As the squad prepares for the World Cup, Lee’s message emphasizes a desire for unity and positive energy from their passionate fans—a critical component as they strive to flourish on the global stage.
