(Cricket News) Before the Test series against Pakistan, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell offered his opinion on the ongoing rivalry between veteran opener David Warner and former Australia pacer Mitchell Johnson, whose criticism of Warner has become the talk of the town leading up to the Australian opener’s final Test series at home. Australia will resume its title defence in the ICC World Test Championship after winning the record-extending sixth World Cup in India.

After winning the One Day International (ODI) World Cup, Australia will play Pakistan in their first away match. Former cricket player Johnson went all out to attack Warner for wanting to say goodbye to Test cricket in the Pakistan Test series.

Warner was included in Australia’s 14-man squad for the first Test against Pakistan. Johnson questioned Warner’s request for a farewell, and the former player also mentioned the infamous ball-tampering scandal in his shocking statement.

All-rounder Maxwell defended Warner following the harsh criticism of the former Australian cricket player, calling him an “absolute champion” of the Australian team. In an interview with Australian radio station SEN, Maxwell agreed with the selectors’ decision to pick Warner, and the World Cup 2023 winner is also looking forward to his teammate scoring runs against Pakistan.

“It is been five years and David Warner has still never really owned the ball-tampering scandal,” Johnson wrote in his Sunday column in The West Australian.

“To say Dave Warner or anyone else involved in sandpaper (gate) is not a hero… I strongly disagree because they have paid their dues. A year out of cricket is a long time,” Usman Khawaja said earlier.

“I am not going to throw my name into some headlines about this. But Davey’s been an absolute champion of Australian cricket for a long period of time and the selectors were pretty clear on what they thought of it (selecting him).” Maxwell expressed his excitement for Davey’s performance in the first Test and his many runs this summer.
