(Football news) Manchester City moved a point clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League after beating Leeds United 2-1 as two similar goals from Ilkay Gundogan sealed the deal for the defending champions. City were toying with Leeds early on in the game as they had numerous scoring chances before finally Gundogan broke the deadlock in the 19th minute from the edge of the box off a Riyad Mahrez assist. Mahrez then again teed up Gundogan for his second goal eight minutes later in a carbon copy of his first goal.
However, Gundogan had a chance to score his first career hat trick but he missed a penalty in the 84th minute as Leeds subsequently responded immediately with Rodrigo scoring at the other end. Pep Guardiola’s side extended their winning run to 10 games as four matches as there are 4 Premier League games left with Manchester City on 82 points. Arsenal on the other hand have 81 points and they have 3 games left. Meanwhile, Leeds, who were playing their first game under interim manager Sam Allardyce are currently in 17th place but all three teams below them have a game in hand.
Despite numerous scoring chances, Haaland was unable to extend the Premier League single season record of 35 goals. The Norway international broke the Premier League goalscoring record this season and could have had at least a couple of goals as one shot hit the crossbar, another off the post and the other narrowly missed the goal. Now Manchester City will shift their attention to play Real Madrid on Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League semi finals, in a bid to secure the first treble in the club’s history as they are currently on a 20 game unbeaten streak in all competitions
“It shows how nice and generous Erling is. If it is 4-0 with 10 minutes left, OK. But at 2-0? Erling is the best penalty taker right now so he has to take it,” Guardiola told the BBC after the match.
“We played an exceptional game,” Guardiola added. “Our possession game was really good. First half was exceptional. We were maybe not as clinical as we should be. The second half, we cannot forget it is three games in six days with a lot of mental pressure. At the end, the game could be over with the penalty. But they score and we have to suffer. But we played really, really good.”
