Juventus keep their hopes alive for a place in the Champions League next season after a comprehensive win over Freiburg
Juventus win 2-0 against Freiburg in the second leg

(Football news) Goals from Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa for Juventus saw off 10-man Freiburg to reach the Europa League quarter-finals as they won 2-0 in the Black forest to claim a 3-0 aggregate win. After a slender win at Turin in the first leg, Juventus saw an early goal from Vlahovic disallowed for offside but then Manuel Gulde was dismissed for blocking a shot with his hand.

Vlahovic stepped up to the penalty spot and converted the subsequent penalty which somewhat eased Allegri’s nerves. Chiesa came off the bench to add a late goal in stoppage time. Juventus were relatively comfortable throughout the match as they booked a place in Friday’s last-eight draw, keeping hopes alive for silverware and direct qualification for next season’s Champions League. Freiburg started off the match very brightly when Matthias Ginter forced Wojciech Szczesny into a great flying save with a header on the 22nd minute mark.

The visitors thought they had the lead inside five minutes as Vlahovic volleyed in after Gleison Bremer’s header hit the crossbar. Juventus had a bit of fortune with another VAR review just before half-time as Federico Gatti’s goal-bound shot struck his outstretched hand when he tried to attempt to block the shot. Gulde got a second yellow card which allowed Vlahovic to score from the spot.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Freiburg gave it their all as they continued to press after half-time. Michael Gregoritsch fired a free-kick wide before Szczesny saved Lucas Holer’s volley away. Chiesa saw a stoppage-time shot saved onto the crossbar by Mark Flekken as Freiburg looked visibly tired. Chiesa finally got his goal and put the icing on the cake when he had his goal less than a minute later as he drilled a low shot which hit the left post and went in.
