(Football news) Gareth Southgate since becoming the England manager has made tough calls. Since then he has taken England in a World Cup semi final, Euro final and a World Cup quarter finals. However Southgate has made quite a few controversial calls along the way. There has always been a debate that Southgate is only successful because of the players that he has. In the latest England Squad for the upcoming Euro qualifiers, the manager has made a lot of calls which are surprising. England will be playing Italy and Ukraine to begin the Euro qualifiers.

Gareth Southgate’s 25-man England squad:

Goalkeepers – Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale

Defenders – Ben Chilwell, Eric Dier, Marc Guehi, Reece James, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker

Midfielders – Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson, James Maddison, Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice

Forwards – Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney

Trent Alexander-Arnold is omitted from the squad which is understandable because he has been out of form this season and also because England have other options at right back. Reece James is having his injury troubles which is why he isn’t there. Ben White who left England’s World Cup camp for unknown reasons is once again not in the squad which further confirms that there has been a fallout between player and manager. Fikayo Tomori has been consistently performing on the highest level with AC Milan and yet he is once again overlooked without any visible reason.

Harry Maguire who has been out of the Manchester United team this season has once again been called up for the squad. It seems like Maguire doesn’t have to meet any criteria to be in the England squad. The one reason for that could be that he has performed well for England whenever called upon. However it is a massive confidence burner for other players who regularly perform at club level.

Conor Gallagher is another player who is in the squad despite not playing that many minutes for Chelsea. James Ward-Prowse is also left out of the squad along with Conor Coady, Tammy Abraham, Jarrod Bowen and Ollie Watkins. Raheem Sterling isn’t in the squad because of injury but Gareth Southgate has confirmed that he would’ve been there if he was fit.
