Is Manchester United planning to buy David de Gea?

Given rumors that Manchester United may try to re-sign their former goalkeeper this summer, Fiorentina is reportedly preparing to trigger a one-year extension in David de Gea's contract
Manchester

(Football news) De Gea represented Manchester United between 2011 and 2023, and he will be remembered as one of the best goalkeepers in the club’s history, having starred over a number of seasons for the Red Devils.

The 34-year-old was released by the English club at the end of the 2022-23 season, with Andre Onana signed as his replacement, and the Spaniard then spent a season out of the game before joining Fiorentina in August 2024.

The Spaniard has been in excellent form for the Purples this term, keeping 10 clean sheets in 31 appearances in all competitions, and recent reports have linked him with a spectacular return to Manchester United.

Onana’s future is being called into question, with the Cameroonian finding it difficult to impress during his two campaigns at Old Trafford, while number two and number three Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton are also being linked with departures.

De Gea has been linked with a return to Man United

De Gea’s deal with Fiorentina is due to expire at the end of June, but according to multiple reports, the Italian giants are planning to exercise a clause which will see him stay for another season.

The report claims that the experienced goalkeeper could double his salary, with Fiorentina determined not to lose him.

“The intention is to keep players like De Gea and [Nicolo] Fagioli but I don’t want to say more,” Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso recently revealed. “We’ll see if they also want to stay, so we can start next year with an even stronger team.”

De Gea made 545 appearances during his time at Manchester United, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cups, three Community Shields and the Europa League in the process.

Will Manchester United sign another goalkeeper this summer?

Even if Onana stays, it is incredibly likely that at least one new goalkeeper will arrive this summer, as Heaton is out of contract, and the veteran could allegedly become a coach at Old Trafford.

Bayindir is also not believed to be happy with his number two role, with the Turkey international looking to be a starter at this stage of his career, so a departure for the 26-year-old is also possible.

Despite the recent speculation, Man United are not thought to be actively looking to replace Onana at this stage of proceedings, and the Cameroonian will again be between the sticks when the Red Devils take on Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night.
