Robin Gosens set to join Inter on loan with an obligation to buy in the summer

(Football news) Atalanta and Germany international Robin Gosens will join the defending champions and league leaders Inter Milan. Gosens is set to join Inter on loan with an obligation to buy for €25-27m, including add-ons. The 27-year-old has rejected an offer from Newcastle United to move to San Siro as the Premier League club had reportedly offered a €3.5m-a-year deal, but Gosens opted to sign Inter’s €3m-a-year contract instead.

The defending champions have also bought in Felipe Caicedo, the striker arrives on loan from Genoa until the end of the season, just six months after Lazio sold him for €2m.Caicedo was specifically requested by coach Simone Inzaghi, having saved him so many times as a super-sub at Lazio. The Ecuador international does not mind being on the bench when called upon and is an understudy to Edin Dzeko.

The Germany international is currently out of action with a thigh injury. He played his last match on September 25 and has only eight appearances across all competitions this season. Gosens joined Atalanta from Heracles Almelo for just €1m in 2017 and the 27-year-old has gone on to score 29 goals and deliver 21 assists in 157 games with Atalanta. Robin Gosens has been a  significant player playing in a wing-back role under Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta. The La Dea coach has molded the 27-year-old into a player who is familiar with the physical as well as tactical and positional demands of the wing-back role, which should be fairly quick in adjusting to Inzaghi’s tactics. Moreover, the German is not only well-suited to the position, but has also shown that he can excel in it.

Inzaghi’s Inter this season have been on fire scoring more than fifty goals and leading the Scudetto race by 4 points as they have finally got a left back who can replace Ivan Perisic who was previously occupying the position and flourishing. Gosens has characteristics that make him well suited to Inter's playing under Simone Inzaghi management, he can play left-back and on the left side of midfield. Gosens is a tough defender, but he can contribute quite a lot going forward as in the 2019/20 season, Gosens scored nine goals and provided eight assists in 34 Serie A matches and the following season, he scored 11 goals and provided six assists in 32 matches. The move for Gosens actually makes sense because Perisic is 32 years old with an expiring contract, Kolarov is 36-years-old and beyond his prime years and although Dimarco is a solid talent at 24-years-old, he is best suited as a substitute for the team. For the Inter fans, Gosens is a very smart and astute signing by the Inter board especially in the January transfer market.
