Luis Campos becomes the new sporting director of PSG

(Football news) After signing Kylian Mbappe on a bumper deal, PSG wasted little bit of time and replaced Leonardo with the experienced campaigner Luis Campos as the Sporting Director of the club. The 57 year old is one of the most respected sporting directors in the whole of Europe, he’s best known for the team he built with Monaco that lifted the Ligue 1 title in 2017 and was subsequently led by a young and emerging Kylian Mbappe. He also oversaw the Lille side that achieved the same feat by beating the mighty PSG to lift the Ligue title in 2021. Campos left Lille in the middle of the season in December 2020 as he was waiting for a big club to come calling. Meanwhile he was assisting the project at Celta Vigo.

Campos and Mbappe's family have been very close since their time in Monaco where Campos watched over the young prodigy and helped nurture into a worldwide talent that he is right now. Luis Campos was one of the big factors leading to the 23-year-old France forward staying in Paris as he knew Leonardo would leave his post of director of football. The new sporting director can expect a busy summer as all eyes will be on PSG on who they will sign this summer. They are also likely to sack Mauricio Pochettino if they find a suitable replacement. Zinedine Zidane is at the top of the club's list but they could face a hard time convincing the former Real Madrid coach to take over this job as Campos will have his task cut out selecting a suitable candidate..

The first thing he needs to do is offload a lot of players on very high salaries, especially in midfield, as they try make prospective moves for four of their top targets in Ousmane Dembele, Frenkie de Jong, Monaco's Aurelien Tchouameni and Lille's Renato Sanches. Nonetheless, Campos will need to have support from his fellow compatriot and former PSG Sporting Director Antero Henrique, as they need to sell off the players who have no future in the French capital. Players like Sergio Rico (on loan to Mallorca this season), Layvin Kurzawa, Thilo Kehrer, Abdou Diallo, Leandro Paredes, Ander Herrera, Danilo Pereira, Gana Gueye, Julian Draxler and Mauro Icardi are potential candidates. The PSG sporting director job is one of the most toughest sporting jobs, many have come and failed to live upto Nasser Al Khelaifi’s ambitions but with Campos, you have a seasoned professional who helps promote youth and most importantly buys players who want to play for the badge rather than the money.
