(Football news) Shocking reports coming from Spain suggest that Frenkie De Jong could leave Barcelona at the end of the season for Manchester United. Barcelona's financial problems means that they need to make some sales and selling De Jong for around €70-80 million would get them some much needed funds. If the Blaugrana were financially stable then the transfer wouldn't even be on the cards. Barcelona's loss will be a massive gain for Manchester United.
Manchester United are going to lose Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matić next season. Frenkie De Jong is a perfect candidate to play the holding midfielder role for the Red Devils. The Dutchman first burst onto the scene with Ajax as he was an integral part of the famous 2018/19 Ajax team that reached the UCL semi finals. De Jong's ability to recycle possession and play out from the back is as good as anyone in world football. He has the capability to play as a box to box midfielder as well but his preferred position is definitely the number 6 role. Due to the dominance of Sergio Busquets at Barcelona, De Jong rarely got to play in that position. He is the perfect modern day holding midfielder who is equally good with or without the ball.
Although his time at Barcelona wasn't the most successful, he certainly has some big game experience. At the age of 25, the midfielder still has bags of potential to become better. Erik ten Hag will be the key man in terms of negotiations. It will be difficult to convince De Jong to give up Champions League football but Ten Hag can certainly do that. Football fans could also see a reunion between De Jong and Donny Van de Beek in midfield. If the transfer goes through then it will be a massive loss for Barcelona. The Dutchman was a part of Barcelona's youth project. De Jong along with Pedri and Gavi was supposed to be the future of Barcelona.

Barcelona would not be selling Frenkie De Jong if it wasn't for financial reasons but the situation is very tricky for the Blaugrana. Manchester United desperately need more quality in midfield and De Jong fits the role perfectly. The Dutchman played the best football of his career under Erik ten Hag and if the pair manage to recreate the magic again then Manchester United will be better in no time.
