Chukwueze scores to help Villarreal pull off upset over Bayern Munich

(Football news) Villarreal shocked the world by eliminating Juventus in the UCL Round of 16. They then defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in the first leg of the quarterfinals at home. Despite the one goal deficit, everyone expected Bayern Munich to come clutch and win it at the Allianz Arena. Unai Emery and his men had completely different ideas as they drew 1-1 in Bavaria and won 2-1 on aggregate.

Julian Nagelsman deployed an unusual 3 at the back system with Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane as wing backs. Bayern Munich as expected started well on top creating a lot of chances. Villarreal despite having very less possession were looking extremely dangerous on the counter attack and had two very good chances towards the end of the first half, one for Arnaut Danjuma and the other for Gerard Moreno but both of them were not converted. Bayern Munich didn't create a clear cut chance but they were getting close.

Bayern Munich finally equalised in the 52nd minute and unsurprisingly it was through Robert Lewandowski who was set up by Thomas Muller. The German had a couple of chances to score himself but missed them. Bayern were pushing for the winner but Danjuma had another chance which was a wake up call for the Bavarian side. They did not wake up though as Moreno assisted Samuel Chukwueze just 4 minutes after the latter had been subbed on. Villarreal pulled off a major upset at one of Europe's premier stadiums to create history.

Bayern Munich were just not good enough over the two legs and could've lost by more goals had Villarreal taken their chances. This will be only the 2nd time Villarreal has been in the UCL semi final with the 1st one being in 2006. The Yellow Submarine will now face the winner of Liverpool vs Benfica in the semi finals. Bayern Munich now have only the Bundesliga to focus on where they have a healthy 9 point lead.
