Bundesliga: Bayern go away to Frankfurt and Dortmund take on Augsburg

(Football news) Bayern take on Eintracht Frankfurt in what could be a tricky fixture for the defending champions. Bayern bounced back from a disappointing week in which they had suffered a shock defeat to VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga and then drew with Red Bull Salzburg 1-1 in their Champions League round-of-16 tie. With Borussia Dortmund also winning, Bayern remained at six points following matchday 23 but having increased their advantage to nine points over the last couple of months.

Nagelsmann will be frustrated that his side haven’t asserted their usual dominance and wrapped up their 10th Bundeliga title by now but even after the slip ups they remain firmly in the driving seat. For Bayern, Thomas Muller will sit out of the trip after testing positive for COVID-19 this week as key players like Alphonso Davies, Leon Goretzka, Kingsley Coman and Manuel Neuer are all out of this fixture.

Dortmund will be looking to brush off their disappointment after bowing out of the Europa League on Thursday against Rangers as they face Augsburg in the league in a bid to keep up with Bayern. Dortmund's thumping 6-0 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Bundesliga last week ensured that the six-point gap between Bayern Munich at the summit was not extended further. Marco Reus had scored  twice and assisted three goals against his former club, which also saw manager Marco Rose win against his former employers in a comfortable Borussen derby victory.

The result did maintain BVB's fine domestic start to the season since New Year as Sunday's victory ensured that they won five of their six Bundesliga outings since returning from the winter break. However, it is the inconsistency in the performance that is affecting Marco Rose’s side, they scored six past Gladbach on Sunday but then conceded two silly goals against Rangers which led to their exit from the competition. It looks like Dortmund’s trophy drought will further extend after going from DFB Pokal cup and the Europa league. For Dortmund, Erling Haaland faces a race against time to be fit for the trip to Augsburg as Thomas Meunier and Gio Reyna look like long term absentees.
