Praveen Jayawickrama and Devon Conway at top of the list of best Test debut this season

(Cricket news) A lot of young cricketers along with seasoned players made their test debut this year. Few of them started their career with blistering performances as batters and bowlers, catching the eye of theirs in the team from their very first match. It is very rare that a player makes his debut in all the three formats in a short period of time as they need time to adapt between the formats, especially at the international level. The Test matches require a lot of time on the pitch, even if you are a bowler, batter or fielder and the format is the longest as well as the oldest in the game. While some did shine in their debut, the others have continued to perform well all year round. The top four test debuts of this season are given below.

Praveen Jayawickrama: Sri Lanka (6/92 and 5/86)

Jayawickrama was the talk of the series in Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka. The spinner made his debut in the 2nd test match and gave the team the breakthrough in the 26th over of the match as he took the wickets of openers in two continuous overs. One of the most senior players on the side, Tamim Iqbal missed a century and the most experienced player Mushfiqur Rahim was removed by the 23 year old as he took 6 wickets. In the second innings, he took a five wicket haul as he finished the innings with figures of 11/ 178 which was the 10th best by a bowler in his debut.

It was the best in over a decade as only two players have taken more than 10 wickets in a match since 2000, Jason Krejza took 12 wickets against India in 2008. Jayawickrama also bowled 64 overs in two innings which was the most in the match for his side. He has made his debut in all the formats this year.

Devon Conway: New Zealand (200 and 23)

Conway had made his debut for the national team last year in a T20 game against West Indies. The left hander scored 200 runs on his Test debut against England, he opened with Tom Latham and was the last man to walk back to the dressing room as he got dismissed in the 123rd over. It was the 6th highest score by a batter on his debut and his score of 23 in the second innings gave him the 5th spot in most runs scored in a debut match. He batted for 9 and half hours which included 22 fours and a six. It was also the highest score by a debutant at Lord’s.

Shreyas Iyer: India (105 and 65)

Shreyas Iyer had made his debut for the national team four years ago in T20 and ODI. He had been waiting since then for a call in the longer format and walked in when India was in trouble at 145-4 against New Zealand but formed a century partnership with Ravindra Jadeja to reinstate the innings. Shreays Iyer became the 16th Indian to hit a century on debut and the third Indian to score more than 160 runs on his debut after Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma.

Axar Patel: India ( 2/40 and 5/60)

Axar Patel had a longer wait than Shreyas Iyer, Patel had made his debut for the national team in an ODI against Bangladesh in 2014. 7 years later, he wore the whites and made sure it was memorable as he took 7 wickets in the match against England. The spinner took two wickets in the first innings which included the wicket of Joe Root who is the leading run scorer in the format this year and Moeen Ali. In the second innings, he took the wicket of opener Dominic Sibley in the 9th over and again took the wicket of Joe Root. Patel’s fifth wicket came in the 52nd over of the innings as Olly Stone missed and it hit in the pads for a leg before.
