India’s tremendous year breaching fortresses in red ball cricket

India's red ball team continues breaching fortresses overseas while keeping home record intact at the same time. India started the year with a series win in Australia where they became the first team to beat Australia at the Gabba since 1988. They then traveled to England and won at Lord's before winning at the Oval after 50 years. They have now become the first Asian team to win at Centurion against South Africa. They also became only the 3rd team to beat South Africa at the venue.

All this while India has also kept their home record great with series wins over England and New Zealand. The only thing missing is the World Test Championship trophy. India were unlucky to miss out on the coveted title as they lost against New Zealand in Southampton. Apart from that India has had a very good year in red ball cricket. The all-round performance of this Indian side has been incredible and it is tough to argue that this is the best Indian side of all time who have had the best year in Indian cricket history. Out of the 9 overseas Tests they won 5, drew 2 and lost 2.

At home India defeated England 3-1 at the beginning of the year and got a 1-0 victory against New Zealand. The credit has to go to the bowlers. India is always a land of spinners. Ravichandran Ashwin has had an excellent year along with Ravindra Jadeja. Axar Patel has stepped in and become a must have player in home conditions. India's pace battery has been a revelation. Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur have all stepped in at different points in the year and won matches for India overseas.

Youngsters like Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj along with a few others have burst onto the scene giving the selectors, coaches and captains a very welcome headache. Next up for India will be the remaining two Tests against the Proteas where they will look to win for the first time in South Africa. Further there is a home series against Sri Lanka before the remaining Test in England.
