(Football news) The challenge of building an exciting new team was placed on the Argentine when he arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer along with a plethora of other new acquisitions. They are now ranked 11th in the Premier League, despite Pochettino having led the team to the EFL Cup final, where they will play Liverpool later this month.
Chelsea dropped to seventh position, seven points behind sixth-place Manchester United, after losing 4-1 away to Liverpool on Wednesday and then losing 4-2 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.
Prior to the doubleheader, Chelsea had won four straight league games at home in West London and five out of seven games overall. That being said, Chelsea’s owners are considering firing manager Mauricio Pochettino following the team’s defeat to Wolves. It’s uncertain right now if the 51-year-old will soon lose his job in the dugout or if Chelsea won’t improve before a decision is made.
After 31 games across all competitions, Pochettino has had 14 victories, 6 draws, and 11 losses; this is a 45% increase in win percentage over Graham Potter’s 39% over the same number of games. Nevertheless, with much greater investment and with Chelsea having made significant roster changes in the summer, Pochettino’s record has been attained.
Pochettino acknowledged that they were not performing up to the standards expected of them after Chelsea’s loss to Wolves and hinted that they would be fired.
However, he has insisted that they are just at the beginning of a project and that it would take time for his players—who are a part of one of the youngest squads in the Premier League—to reach their full potential.
The replay of Chelsea’s FA Cup fourth-round match against Aston Villa, which ended in a scoreless draw the first time around, will take place tomorrow. On February 12, they travel to Crystal Palace in the Premier League, and on February 17, Chelsea faces the difficult journey to Manchester City.
