(Football News) Franz Beckenbauer not only epitomized the values of German football, its legendary tenacity, and unwavering resilience, but he was German football incarnate.

As one of the rare few to lift the World Cup both as a player and manager, Beckenbauer was arguably the greatest footballer ever produced by Germany, revolutionizing the role of a defender in the game. On the pitch, he emerged as the finest leader his country had seen, defying one of the greatest football teams, Johan Cruyff’s Total Footballers. Beyond that, he became a revered manager, a spiritual guide for numerous managers from Germany.

A testament to his impact is the fact that he halted Cruyff as a player and tactically countered Diego Maradona as a manager. His nickname, “Der Kaiser” (The Emperor), was a fitting tribute to his commanding presence on the field, exuding control over his team and mastery over opponents.

Beckenbauer’s legacy extends to his role as a sweeper, transcending the conventional defensive approach by actively participating in play-making and ball-carrying—a prototype of the modern-day sweeper. His versatility and prowess made him one of the finest in this position. In the 1974 World Cup, Germany strategically deployed him as the libero, showcasing his ability to cover the defense while contributing to attacks.

Off the field, Beckenbauer became a pop and cult figure in Germany, pioneering aspects like player agents and regular appearances in advertisements. He ventured into music, with some of his songs still played at Bayern Munich’s home ground, the Allianz Arena.

Despite being considered one of the greatest players ever, Beckenbauer humbly differentiated himself from Pele, emphasizing his role as a team player and playmaker. His career trajectory, from center forward to left-wing and central midfield, showcased his energy and creativity.

Beckenbauer’s inspiration for football stemmed from Germany’s 1954 triumph, the Miracle of Bern. His courage became legendary, as seen in the 1970 World Cup semi-final when he played with a dislocated shoulder, earning admiration even in defeat.

While his career faced moments of controversy, such as a ban from football in 2014 for non-cooperation in a corruption inquiry, Beckenbauer’s spirit and influence on German football remained unblemished. “Der Kaiser” aptly encapsulates the essence of his impact and legacy.
