(Football news) Atletico Madrid defeated Mallorca 3-1 on the day their club turned 120 years old. The victory got them 2 points behind Real Madrid and now Atlético Madrid have a good chance of finishing above their arch rivals. Diego Simeone as usual lined-up in a 3-5-2 formation with Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata up front. Jan Oblak had a knock so Ivo Grbic started between the sticks. After playing against Barcelona in midfield, Axel Witsel started at right centre back alongside Jose Gimenez and Mario Hermosa. Angel Correa was left on the bench along with Pablo Barrios, Saul Niguez and Geoffrey Kondogbia.

Mallorca got off to a great start as Daniel Rodriguez assisted Matija Nastasic for the opening goal in the 20th minute. Atletico Madrid git more into the game and started applying a lot of pressure. Nahuel Molina won a penalty in the 40th minute but VAR ruled it out as the defender got the ball before taking out the Argentine right back. Atletico Madrid finally got the equalizer via Rodrigo de Paul just before half time. In the 2nd half the Rojiblancos took complete control of the game. Alvaro Morata and Yannick Carrasco scored to give Atletico Madrid a 3-1 win at the Wanda Metropolitano. Antoine Griezmann once again had an incredible game as he gave 2 assists.

The Rojiblancos haven’t let the loss at the Camp Nou derail their good form. Now the only thing on their mind will be to finish 2nd above Real Madrid. Atletico Madrid in many ways need a good transfer window to start challenging for titles again. They have already agreed a deal to sign Caglar Soyuncu from Leicester City which is a good deal. A midfielder and a couple of wingers would be on top of Atletico’s transfer list. The Rojiblancos on the weekend have to play Real Valladolid away from home.
