Manchester United close on signing Cunha from Wolves

Manchester United has made headway in their pursuit of a deal for Matheus Cunha, a forward for Wolverhampton Wanderers

(Football news) On Sunday afternoon, the versatile attacker was part of the Wolves side that earned a 1-0 victory over the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

As a result, Wolves have moved level on points with Ruben Amorim’s side in the Premier League table, an indication of how far Manchester United have fallen in recent years.

Nevertheless, despite their European participation in 2025-26 remaining in considerable doubt, they continue to be linked with many of the players that may also move to many of the other higher-profile teams in England’s top flight.

As per multiple reporters and sources, Manchester United have emerged as the frontrunners to secure a deal for Cunha at the end of the season.

“Good feelings” between United, Cunha

Multiple reports claim that there are “good feelings” between Manchester United and Cunha’s representatives at this point in negotiations.

Personal terms are allegedly already being discussed with the expectation being that the 25-year-old would jump at the chance to move to Old Trafford if a deal can be agreed.

Recent reports have suggested that Cunha would prefer to join a traditional “top-six” club over any of the surprise contenders for Champions League qualification, such as Nottingham Forest.

United, and other admirers, are aware that a £62.5m release clause can be activated in Cunha’s contract, something which United would need to determine is plausible.

Despite Cunha being on a contract until 2029, it has become increasingly apparent that the player wishes to depart Molineux over the coming months as he craves a move to a bigger team.

That said, Wolves are expected to insist on the buy-out option being paid in full, rather than being tempted to negotiate for a marginally lower fee.

Would Cunha suit United?

With Wolves playing a similar 3-4-2-1 under Vitor Pereira as United are under Amorim, Cunha would be no stranger to the setup under a different Portuguese at the Theatre of Dreams.

The Brazil international is capable of being deployed in one of the two attacking-support roles or down the centre, his current position at Wolves being deeper behind the number nine.

For a team of Wolves’ standing in the Premier League, Cunha has contributed a terrific 28 goals and 11 assists from his 77 appearances in the competition.

As such, he would become an instant first-choice pick in a struggling United side, there currently being potential for him to replace Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee down the middle of the attack.
