Heavyweight Netherlands beat Indian Women as Felice Albers scores twice in Tokyo Hockey opener

(Hockey news)Olympic 2021 Live Update: The Netherlands women’s hockey team began their campaign by beating the Indian Women 5-1 at Oi Hockey Stadium North Pitch in Tokyo. The goal scoring started early as Felice Albers scored in the 6th minute but that was short lived as India’s Captain Rani Rampal scored the equaliser in the 10th minute.

The second quarter did not see goals by both the teams. The third quarter saw the Netherlands scoring thrice as Margot van Geffen scored in the 33rd minute which was a penalty corner goal, Felice Albers scored her second goal of the match in the 43rd minute and the third goal of the quarter was scored in the 45th minute of the match by Frédérique Matla. The final quarter saw Caia Jacqueline van Maasakker score the 5th and final goal of the match. The scoreline read 5-1 at the final whistle.

The Indian women are making their third Olympic appearance and this their first back to back outing at the Olympics. The Netherlands team on the other side competed in every final from 2004 to 2016 and finished on top in Beijing 2008 and London 2012, their second title after the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The Indian women who are already making history at the Tokyo Olympics will look to improve in their next fight.
