(Tennis news) Denis Shapovalov, a dangerous Canadian, was defeated in the Round of 16 by the 22nd-ranked Alexander Zverev after an impressive effort. The match’s first game was decided by Zverev winning the first two games after breaking the left-hander’s serve. After the break, Shapovalov got stronger and presented stiffer resistance, but his failure to squeak out a break point ultimately proved to be his downfall. In the second set, Zverev dropped four games but otherwise won in 75 minutes due to his strong serve and return.

As Alexander Zverev made his first appearance in the Halle final eight in four years, the tall German won an astonishing 82% of first-serve points. He is currently 23-15 in 2023 and 14-6 at the ATP 500 grass court competition.

While this was going on, World No. 28 Jarry upset the second seed in two close sets to prevent a thrilling Zverev-Stefanos Tsitsipas quarterfinal. In a tiebreak, the current Santiago and Geneva champions won a close-opening set. He then won the second game 7-5 to earn his sixth top-10 triumph on the ATP rankings, completing the victory in just under two hours.

In terms of winners, Jarry outhit Tsitsipas, launching 34 to the Greek’s 22. He improved to 22-8 on the year and made it all the way to the Halle quarterfinals in his first competition.

Head-to-Head

The two players have split their four prior encounters, all of which took place on clay. In the Geneva semifinals earlier this year, Jarry triumphed in their previous meeting in straight sets. Five sets each have been won by the players against each other.

Predictions

Alexander Zverev and Nicholas Jarry have somewhat similar game approaches and both enjoy dominating opponents from the baseline. Both players move well for their height, serve heavily, and hit hard from both flanks.

But the two players’ paths to the final eight have been very different. Jarry has played three tiebreaks in five sets whereas Zverev has won both of his matches without dropping a set. Zverev has a stronger grass court background than Jarry, going 30-16 on the surface to Jarry’s 6-6. So, even if it’s a close game, the Germans should prevail again.
