Dortmund needed some good energy going into the game after suffering a 5-1 loss to Stuttgart the previous time out, but they got off to the worst possible start when Matúš Bero scored the first goal of a strong counterattack by Bochum on a windy evening at Signal Iduna Park.

Even worse, the noisy home fans began to jeer and hoot after Dani de Wit scored the visitors’ second goal via an open net due to Gregor Kobel’s poor pass.

Although it appeared that Dortmund would be in a significant deficit at the end of the first half, Serhou Guirassy gave the home team hope when he headed in from close range to cut the lead in half.

Dortmund’s comeback was further aided when Guirassy was brought down in the box, causing the referee to award the hosts a spot-kick as the pressure increased after the break. Emre Can scored the subsequent penalty with composure to tie the game.

After letting off a little bit, Dortmund’s pressure paid off in the closing fifteen minutes as Serhou Guirassy scored the game’s third goal to give the home team the lead and demonstrate why he was Dortmund’s top summer target.

In the closing minutes, Dortmund’s lead was extended to two goals thanks to a strike from second-half substitute Felix Nmecha that miraculously slipped past the Bochum keeper and across the line.
