Women’s Super League: Leicester’s late own goal gifts Everton a win

(Football news) A deflected freekick off goalkeeper Kirstie Levell gifted Everton a 1-0 win over Leicester City at Walton Hall Park in the Women’s Super League. Both teams struggled to break each other down in the opening exchanges as Everton employed a high press which was expertly dealt with by Leicester City’s backline. The visitors (Leicester) had the first opportunity when Molly Pike attempted to chip Emily Ramsey but her effort was caught by the goalkeeper. The Toffees had their first attempt midway through the season half when Nathalie Bjorn slipped the ball to Katja Snoeijs whose attempt was blocked by Levell.

Everton’s Izzy Christiansen then tried to pick out Snoeijs who couldn’t capitalise on the opportunity while 25 year old Lucy Graham had a half chance from the edge of the area but fired wide with her weaker foot as Leicester held on to a barrage of attacks. The Foxes had an opportunity of their own through Jemma Purfield whose dangerous cross was cleared by Everton’s Megan Finnigan. In the second half, Ramsey, who was making her competitive debut for Everton collided with Sam Tierney and required medical attention to continue.

Leicester City were awarded a freekick which was shot straight at the goalkeeper from Purfield and Everton’s Ramsey successfully parried the shot away. Toffees player Gabby George then had an attempt of her own from a tight angle which was blocked by Levell. Both teams struggled to break each other down despite having opportunities but the deadlock was finally broken in the 94th minute with an inswinging free-kick that found the top corner after a deflection by Leicester goalkeeper Kirstie Levell. Everton will host Chelsea on October 16th in their next match while Leicester will travel to Manchester City on the same date.
