Will Luka Modric’s game time significantly reduce this season?

(Football news) Luka Modric renewed his Real Madrid contract till 2023 after the last one had expired. Real Madrid have a system of only offering 1 year extension to players above the age of 35 which is why Modric isn't being awarded with a long term deal. The policy has resulted in Madrid losing Sergio Ramos last year but Modric is very adamant of wanting to continue with Real Madrid. Despite his age the Croatian is showing no signs of slowing down. Los Blancos had an incredible last season where they won the La Liga and the Champions League. Luka Modric was at the center of all that as he ran the show in midfield throughout the season.

The Croatian midfielder has played 103 matches over the last two seasons. At some point his body will slow down even though there haven't been any signs whatsoever. Real Madrid's midfield trio of Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Luka Modric have been consistently playing for the last 5 seasons. Now they have stiff competition in the form of Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni. Ancelotti may slowly start the process of passing on the baton because even Kroos is in the final year of his contract. There is a possibility that Modric plays a lot less this season. This has been said about Modric for the past two seasons where his game time should've been reduced but it doesn't.

One reason could be that Real Madrid don't have enough competition for him. The other reason which is the more likely one is that Modric is undroppable. His performance is at such a high level and at such consistency that any manager finds it tough to leave him out. The midfielder's fitness is always up as he rarely gets injured. It will be interesting to see how Modric is used next season and how he fares. Camavinga, Valverde and Tchouaméni will definitely push the Croatian to do better.
