Di María Slams Ref After 2-2 Draw

Ángel María, Benfica’s star midfielder, discussed his team’s 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors in their Club World Cup debut during a post-match interview with DAZN.

“We tried to win.  We understand how football is played in Argentina and how we should approach the game, but we didn’t do so in the opening half.  Something was missing.  “We improved in the second half, but we couldn’t secure the win,” Di María admitted.

He also criticized the referee’s performance, citing the several hard challenges that went unpunished early on.  “The referee allowed a lot of hard tackles; he could have issued yellow cards early, and the game would have been more beautiful,” he stated.

Di María admitted to surrendering two early goals, stating, “We were playing well and could have scored first, but we had two lapses and conceded twice.”  That is football.  We knew it could happen.  We fought back to equalize, and now we must move forward.”

Di María highlighted the importance of upcoming fixtures.  “The next game versus Auckland is critical due to goal differential.  All three matches are important; we wanted to win all three.  We didn’t win this one, but our goal is to win the other two and lead the group.”
