What’s next for Real Madrid after missing out on Kylian Mbappe?

(Football news) After almost a year of reports and rumors going back and forth, Kylian Mbappe has renewed his contract with PSG. Mbappe had reportedly agreed a deal to join Real Madrid but then backed out of it. Reliable reports in Spain say that the Real Madrid board are all shocked by the news as they expected the Frenchman to join the club next season. After a public humiliation like this it would be safe to say that Real Madrid will never try to sign Mbappe ever again.

Now Real Madrid will have to look past this whole chapter and focus on other signings which will improve their squad. Antonio Rudiger is definitely joining the club with only the official announcement pending. Rudiger will bring much needed depth to their defense. A strong tall center back who is great in the air is exactly what Madrid needed. One place where Real Madrid need reinforcements is left back. Marcelo is expected to leave the club after his contract expires at the end of the season. Ferland Mendy has established himself as the first choice left back and Rudiger's arrival gives Ancelotti the option of using Alaba at left back. Real Madrid may still want to consider going for a back up left back and Fran Garcia is being considered.

Aurélien Tchouaméni has been linked with a move to Real Madrid with Liverpool also in the mix. Isco's departure has already been confirmed by Real Madrid while Dani Ceballos is also expected to leave. Tchouaméni would add quality to this Real Madrid midfield. The likelihood is that he won't be directly put into the starting XI just like Eduardo Camavinga but it will be a gradual process. The Frenchman would be a perfect backup and a long term heir for Casemiro. Youri Tielemans who is rumored to be seeking a move away from Leicester City is another option.

The one place which is the most important is the right wing position. Rodrygo has produced amazing moments in that position this season. However he has been inconsistent at times and looks much more effective off the bench. Marco Asensio has fallen way down the pecking order in the later part of the season. Fede Valverde has been used on that side which just proves that Real Madrid need a right winger. Two players who would fit perfectly are Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. The pair will both enter the final year of their contract and are yet to sign an extension. Salah's contractual dispute has been very public as Liverpool reportedly can't match his demands.

The signing of any of the two will be a marquee player as well as a much needed one. Serge Gnabry is another player who has been linked to the club. Robert Lewandowski is currently trying to push for a move to Barcelona but according to his former agent the player has always wanted to play for Real Madrid. It is very likely that if Real Madrid entered the race the Polish striker may be tempted. Christopher Nkunku and Rafeal Leao are other options on the younger side that have been mentioned. There were strong rumors that Real Madrid would sign one of Raul de Tomas and Borja Mayoral as a backup for Karim Benzema. Now that Mbappe isn't coming Madrid may be tempted to go for a better and more expensive option.

Real Madrid have bigger things like the UCL final against Liverpool to worry about but the work will definitely have to start straight after that. It is important for Real Madrid to not let the Mbappe chapter result in them spending money recklessly which will be a huge mistake. There is still a chance that Mbappe will end up at Real Madrid in the coming years but it will definitely be something Real Madrid would never count on.
