Wettingen Honors Athletes at Delayed Ceremony

The annual sports awards ceremony was ultimately hosted by the local government of Wettingen, however it was scaled down to highlight the event’s importance for the community.

The event was held at the Margeläcker school building’s auditorium instead of the customary location now that the budget is in place.  The importance of sports in Wettingen was emphasized by both Mayor Roland Kuster and Sports Minister Philippe Rey, who also emphasized that celebrating sportsmen would always be a top priority, regardless of party politics or budget constraints.

Calvin Stettler, a sports pundit, led the evening with his trademark charm and wit.  The Rotweiss Wettingen field hockey team and Wettingen Wild Lacrosse, regular competitors, were honored for their exceptional national and international accomplishments.  Notably, a silver medal at the U16 European Championship was largely the result of the efforts of local young players.

Athletes from BSG Wettingen and the seasoned members of LV Wettingen-Baden, who won several national and international titles, were also well-known.  The tennis players won the Swiss championship title in the men’s over-65 division for the first time, and the gymnastics teams from STV Wettingen and the Tennis Club Wettingen were particularly noteworthy.  As more athletes took the stage than were still seated in the crowd, the theater slowly began to empty as the awards for the numerous teams were presented.

Kyokushinkay Karate Wettingen, who were new to the event, left a lasting impact.  At the World Championships, brothers Simon and Florian Zurfluh and Ramon Pfändler won a slew of gold in the Kata category.  Pfändler won both the Swiss elite championship and the global crown.  Florian Zurfluh finished in third place, while Simon Zurfluh was named runner-up.  Together, they won the gold medal for the team and carried all three medals to Wettingen.

Nina Crameri, who organized the event, had planned to remain anonymous and wished for a seamless ceremony without having to take the stage.  When Sports Minister Rey unexpectedly presented her with a Special Award honoring her exceptional contributions to Wettingen’s sports community, her aspirations were crushed.  Crameri accepted the accolade, overwhelmed yet happy, and then turned his attention to planning the event.

The post-ceremony reception was well greeted by attendees from the commercial, political, and sports sectors, highlighting the significance of this yearly event for Wettingen’s thriving sporting community.
