Tottenham Hotspurs set to play Sheffield United in the Premier League

Spurs continue Premier League play on Saturday afternoon at home against Sheffield United after a stellar start to life under Ange Postecoglou

(Football news) Just before the international break, the Lilywhites destroyed newly promoted Burnley 5-2, while the Blades earned their first point by drawing 2-2 with Everton at home. When Spurs’ EFL Cup run came to an end with a penalty shootout loss to Fulham in the second round, closing off one avenue to a long-awaited trophy, and Postecoglou’s team fell behind to Lyle Foster’s goal with just four minutes on the clock against Burnley, the infamous Giorgio Chiellini clip started making the rounds on social media once more.

Before halftime, however, a beautiful chip from Son Heung-min and a thunderbolt from Cristian Romero completely changed the course of the match. Later, after the vivacious James Maddison had expertly pinpointed the bottom corner, the former scored a courageous hat trick.

With just a few seconds left, Josh Brownhill doubled Burnley’s score for the day, but Tottenham’s celebrations were unaffected as they secured second place in the table by earning 10 out of a possible 12 points in the 2023–24 Premier League season.

Tottenham has only been surpassed by Manchester City in terms of total points, and Brighton & Hove Albion is the only team to have scored more goals than the Lilywhites with 12 attempts to their credit. Tottenham has scored at least two goals in every Premier League game they have played under Postecoglou so far, a total of 11 times.

Spurs could not be in a better position going into their first North London derby at the Emirates on September 24, and a mouthwatering home match against Liverpool is also on the menu at the end of the month. Formerly struggling midfielders have been given a new lease of life, and familiar faces in attack are shining.

At Bramall Lane two weeks ago, Everton custodian Jordan Pickford was both Sheffield United’s best friend and worst enemy as Abdoulaye Doucoure scored the Toffees’ first Premier League goal of the season before Cameron Archer’s precise finish gave the Blades the lead after a tremendous piece of luck.

Arnaut Danjuma scored an own goal at the back post to tie the game for Everton, who were then indebted to Pickford for an incredible double save to deny Oli McBurnie at the very last second. A second Archer strike hit the post before launching into the net off Pickford’s back, similar to Emiliano Martinez’s own goal against Arsenal back in February.

One point was still an improvement over Paul Heckingbottom’s team’s first three Premier League games, and the 17th-placed Blades are now keeping their heads above water thanks to the goal differential tally. Despite Paul Heckingbottom’s team feeling the disappointment of what might have been, one point was still a positive result.

When it comes to early EFL Cup eliminations, Sheffield United and Spurs can both relate. The Blades lost to Lincoln City despite having a 12-yard advantage before holding on for a point against Everton, and four of the visitors’ past five competitive away games have also ended in defeat.

Prior to the Blades’ relegation from the Premier League in 2020–21, Spurs also easily defeated Sheffield United twice, 3-1 and 4-0. However, only six months ago, a goal by Iliman Ndiaye sent Heckingbottom’s team’s opponents, the Lilywhites, out of the FA Cup in the fifth round, effectively ending Tottenham’s hopes of winning a trophy.
