Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, declared that Spain was not in the running for the 2035 Women’s World Cup since only one legitimate offer was received.
The fact that Spain will not be hosting the next World Cup has been established. At the UEFA Congress this Thursday, Infantino announced that the United Kingdom will host the tournament in ten years, despite Rafael Louzan’s declaration less than a week ago that Spain, Morocco, and Portugal were interested in doing so.
Only ‘one valid bid’ was put in for the 2035 Women’s World Cup, the FIFA president said. No other nations or organizations were able to formally submit their bids in the allotted period, Infantino stressed.
Given that Louzan’s comments were released to the public on March 28, just three days prior to the bidding window closing on March 31, these statements seem a little unexpected.
FIFA was perplexed by the RFEF’s remarks, Infantino said. FIFA thought Spain would make a bid, according to the British media outlet The Times, but UEFA had not heard anything new on Spain’s or Portugal’s plans.
Additional reports state that it was believed the RFEF wanted to duplicate the bidding process that secured them the right to host the 2030 men’s World Cup. But it seems that Portugal and Morocco submitted their bids separately, unaffiliated with Spain.
The RFEF disputes the assertion that they did not submit a candidacy and upholds their stance that they were in fact ready to compete. However, FIFA reportedly favored the United Kingdom, stating that the 2035 World Cup will be held in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, according to federation sources.
The nation is scheduled to host another significant competition after the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro, which was successfully hosted in England and in which the English team won. ‘We are honored to be the sole applicants for the Women’s World Cup 2035,’ said English FA CEO Mark Bullingham, who was thrilled by Infantino’s news.
Ten years later, there are still little details available concerning the tournament. The possibility of a World Cup final at Wembley Stadium, however, has already captured the attention of the football community.
