Delhi Capitals assistant coach Matthew Mott has praised Axar Patel for his inclusive and collaborative leadership style, saying the new skipper ensures everyone feels involved and heard within the team environment.
Despite limited captaincy experience prior to the IPL – having led Gujarat just 23 times and DC once last year – Axar has made an unbeaten start to his full-time leadership stint, guiding DC to three straight wins and the top of the table.
“He’s been outstanding,” Mott said ahead of DC’s clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. “I didn’t know him much before this tournament, but he’s got a great balance between cricket and life. He makes a point to include everyone, keep the mood light, and remind players to enjoy themselves.”
Mott believes Axar’s real strength lies in knowing when to step back and lean on his support system. “He doesn’t try to be the only voice in the room. He draws from senior players and coaches around him. He’s not taking it all on himself, and that’s a mark of a smart leader.”
According to Mott, Axar’s approach builds a strong, resilient unit. “If we do have a bad day, I expect his messaging will be just as calm and positive. That kind of consistency is key in a long tournament.”
Fraser-McGurk Given Full Backing Despite Quiet Start
Mott also spoke about Jake Fraser-McGurk, who has yet to hit his stride this season. After a breakout 2024 campaign where he smashed 330 runs at a blistering strike rate of 234, the Australian has managed just 39 runs in three games so far in IPL 2025.
However, Mott isn’t concerned. “Jake plays a high-risk role, and we know that when he clicks, he can win games on his own. He has full autonomy from the leadership group, especially from Axar, who’s encouraged him to play with freedom and attack from ball one.”
Comparing him to players like Phil Salt, Mott added, “He plays a high-tempo game, and while it comes with risk, he can do things very few players can. We’re excited for him to bat on a good surface in Bengaluru and show what he’s capable of.”
Du Plessis Likely to Return vs Former Team
Faf du Plessis, who missed the last match due to a groin niggle, appears set to return against his former side, RCB. The veteran opener had an extended net session and looked in good touch, even launching a few shots into the stands.
“He’ll be assessed by the physios, but he’s definitely moving around a lot better,” said Mott. “The schedule has allowed him time to recover, and if he’s fit, he’s obviously a huge player for us.”
Even if Faf isn’t available, Mott believes DC’s squad depth can cover the gap. “KL [Rahul] stepped up brilliantly last game. That performance showed our flexibility and the character of the group.”
With Axar at the helm and the squad finding its rhythm early, DC’s campaign is off to a dream start — and with key players like Faf and Fraser-McGurk getting back to full throttle, they’ll be one to watch this season.
