City’s Struggles Highlighted in Derby

There is always a sense of excitement around derby games, and this weekend’s matchup between Manchester United and Manchester City was no different.  The expectations for an exciting match, however, were soon dashed when United, in spite of their difficulties this season, emerged as the team that deserved the points, albeit by a slim margin.

A feeling of disappointment lingers when one considers Pep Guardiola’s team’s performance.  Their present performance stood in sharp contrast to the thrilling squads of past seasons.  Despite their obvious talent, stars like Mateo Kovacic, Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, and Kevin de Bruyne failed to provide the spark that supporters have grown accustomed to.  Their formerly regular outbursts of genius have been progressively shorter.

It is hardly surprising that the midfield found it difficult to keep up with the game’s tempo, as their average age is almost 33.  A midfield built on experience rather than youthful dynamism just cannot compete at the top level of the Premier League, even though having a few seasoned players on the team can be advantageous.

When City tried to launch a swift and forceful counterattack, this problem became apparent.  The football simile “He looked like he was towing a caravan through quicksand” comes to mind.  Although it may come out as harsh, it accurately depicts the lack of necessary rhythm and mobility on the field.

It appears that both Manchester clubs will soon face formidable obstacles.  A significant reorganization will be necessary even if City wins the FA Cup and finishes in the top four, possibly much more so than their opponents who are having trouble establishing themselves throughout the city.
