Serie A: AC Milan win their first Scudetto since 2011

(Football news) AC Milan went on to secure their first Scudetto since 2011 as they beat the giant Killer Sassuolo 3-0 on the final-day victory at Sassuolo on Sunday, with a double from their main man Olivier Giroud and one from the departing Franck Kessie to seal the Scudetto in style. Stefano Pioli's side came into the final match of the season knowing that a point would be enough for them to finish top above city rivals Inter who subsequently won their match against Sampdoria 3-0 also, but after Giroud squeezed the ball in the goal in the 17th minute, a 19th Serie A title never looked in doubt for the Rossenari’s.

France international Giroud then went onto stab home a second goal in the 32nd minute after fine work from Rafael Leao to put Pioli's men on course for their first trophy in five years, without concentrating much on Inter’s match, AC Milan made sure that there was no relenting from Milan as Kessie slotted home a third four minutes from the first half end and title race, was virtually sealed before halftime. After the break, it was party time in Emilia-Romagna, with 18,000 Milan fans, celebrating throughout the half as AC Milan never looked in any danger of conceding their precious lead

The final whistle was greeted with wild scenes of celebration from the club who have waited far too long for a Scudetto for a side which is used to winning major trophies as they finished the season two points above Inter, whose home win over Sampdoria was in vain. In the second half, Fikayo Tomori's header was cleared off the line and Alexis Saelemaekers' shot was well saved. In the opening minutes of the match Rafael Leao stole the ball down the left side and squared it for Giroud who finished it calmly as he fired his side in front. The second goal was all about the grit and persistence of Leao, who again held off several tackles from the Sassuolo players before again squaring the ball to Giroud who scored his 11th Serie A goal of the season.

Kessie, who was playing his final game for AC Milan before joining Barcelona next season then side-footed the third goal with ease to finish the job in the first half only. 40 year old Zlatan Ibrahimovic thought he had added the icing on the cake with a fourth off the bench, but his header was ruled out for offside. Little did it matter as the celebrations were already in full swing. Even for Pioli it was a joyous moment as he won his first trophy after 19 years of being a head coach and he too joined in with supporters singing "Pioli's on fire" in the final few minutes of the match. At the final whistle Milan's jubilant supporters swarmed the pitch, embracing every player and staff with their wait for another league title finally over after 11 years

"I don't remember when we last lost a game," Pioli told the reporters. "We deserved this Scudetto because we have been more consistent and we have won difficult matches, coming from behind in a derby and winning twice in Rome.

"My bosses have given me exceptional confidence; if you get to this level it is because each member has given their all."
