Marco Rose gets sacked by Dortmund, Edin Terzic is set to replace him

(Football news) Marco Rose has been sacked by the Dortmund board after just one season in charge. Rose guided Dortmund to second place in the Bundesliga this season, eight points behind champions Bayern Munich, who won their 10th consecutive league title. Dortmund were left disappointed in Europe this season after they finished third behind Ajax and Sporting CP in the Champions League group stage, suffering an embarrassing 6-4 aggregate defeat to Rangers in the first knockout phase of the Europa League.

Rose's side also suffered a shock exit in the third round of the German Cup at hands of Bundesliga 2 side St. Pauli. The German coach is leaving Dortmund with a record of 27 wins from 46 games in all competitions. Rose had joined Dortmund from Borussia Monchengladbach last summer after he had a very impressive campaign with them. He previously enjoyed managerial spells at Lokomotiv Moscow, Leipzig and FC Salzburg. Dortmund have reportedly held discussions over appointing Rose's replacement in the coming days but as of now Edin Terzic is the current favourite to replace him. Rose's exit comes as a shock, especially after striker Erling Haaland moved to Manchester City in a €60 million deal. The German club has signed Karim Adeyemi from FC Salzburg since then. Along with him, they have signed German centre back duo of Nikulas Sule and Nico Schlotterback.

The German media are convinced that Borussia will return Edin Terzic to the bench. Terzić has already taken over the Dortmund bench in December 2020, after the removal of Lucien Favre. The young coach led BVB until winning the Cup against RB Leipzig last season, after which he remained at the club as technical director. Terzić led Borussia Dortmund in 32 games, winning 20 games, drawing 4 and losing 8. Moreover, Terzić also dismissed Sevilla in the round of 16 in the Champions League, but then was eliminated in the quarter-finals against  Manchester City. He has previously worked as an assistant to Lucien Favre. In addition, at Dortmund he was a scout in the past and also worked with the youth team for several years.

“BVB and Coach Marco Rose end their relationship," the club said in a statement on Twitter. "Following an intensive season analysis on Thursday, including Rose, Watzke, Zorc, Kehl, and Sammer, the club has decided to move forward, and wishes Marco Rose the best of luck in his next opportunity."

"Despite a difficult season… I was convinced of our path," Rose said. "During our conversation, the impression matured in me that 100% conviction of all those responsible was no longer present. In the end, we decided together to end the cooperation."
