Sergi Roberto is set to sign a new contract despite rumors of him leaving the club

(Football news) Sergio Roberto has accepted a contract renewal offer from Barcelona and will stay on at the club for at least one more season. The 31-year-old is into the final months of his contract and has already made it clear he wants to continue at the Camp Nou. According to Spanish sources they were reporting that after rejecting the first proposal put forward by the club, Roberto has now accepted a second offer that will be till 2024. Barcelona acted quickly knowing that he was free to talk to clubs in order to join them in the summer as a free agent

Roberto will still remain as one of the club’s lowest earners and has already claimed he’s earning as if he’s playing for Barcelona B but his love for the city and fans helped him stay at the club. The versatile veteran hasn’t played too much this season but subsequently appears to be in Xavi’s plans for the future. He has only started just five La Liga games and has scored against Athletic Club and Real Valladolid, he has made seven substitute appearances this season. Roberto now could see more game time in the second half of the season, as the fixture list becomes more and the matter of fact that Hector Bellerin left the club to join Sporting Lisbon.

The La Blaugrana are working on a string of contract extensions and renewals in 2023 with club Joan Laporta claiming that the extension for Gavi and Ronald Araujo’s are almost complete. He also confirmed that Balde’s extension will be beyond 2024, but the player himself hinted that negotiations are still ongoing, with his agent Jorge Mendes in talks with the club officials. Balde is going to replace Jordi Alba, as the club’s long term left back, with the Spanish defender turning 34 in March. Roberto’s extension is crucial for Xavi’s rebuild as he has the ability to cover multiple positions proving to be a valuable asset.

Xavi was asked about the latest on both players, of their weekend trip to La Liga rivals Villarreal,and he is confident of retaining both players, with Roberto’s deal expiring this summer.

“We’re close on a renewal for Roberto, a new deal will be agreed soon. It’s great to have a player who can help like he always does”, the former midfielder stated. “I spoke to Balde in a one-to-one meeting and he wants to stay here at Barca.”
