Rohit to lead India at the 2024 T20 World cup

(Cricket news) Rohit Sharma will be the captain of India for the upcoming T20 World Cup which is set to be played in the Caribbean and USA this June. This was officially confirmed by Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary, at an event in Rajkot.

Post the last T20 World Cup, Rohit did not feature in the shortest format of the game for India until this January. Hardik Pandya led the side in his absence. Their were several speculations that Hardik will become India’s full time white-ball captain, while Rohit Sharma will no longer feature in the shortest format.

Rohit however made his comeback to the Indian set-up against Afghanistan for a 3-match series earlier this year. He announced his comeback in some style scoring a wonderful ton in the 3rd T20I at Bengaluru, when the side was in trouble after loosing quick wickets.

All the speculations over the captaincy was however dismissed by the BCCI secretary. “At this point in time, Rohit is an all-format captain. It is a collective decision, and the selectors are fully aligned on the matter. Hardik Pandya will retain his position as vice-captain for the T20 World Cup. Consider if Hardik gets injured, as he did in the previous World Cup. In such a scenario, who should we entrust with the leadership responsibility,” Shah stated.

Shah also strongly backed Virat Kohli, who is not a part of the ongoing England series due to personal reasons. “There is no issue with Virat. In a 15-year cricketing career, if one asks for leave for one series that is his right. Virat is not a player who will take leave without a genuine reason. We need to back and trust our players,” the BCCI official said.
