Rodrygo returns to training ahead of Real Madrid’s trip to Espanyol

(Football news) Last season was legendary for Real Madrid as they won their 14th Champions League and 35th La Liga. Los Blancos are off to a flying start this season with a UEFA Super Cup win over Eintracht Frankfurt and two wins out of two in the league. The general feeling around the club was that the squad is better then last season after the addition of Antonio Rudiger and Aurélien Tchouaméni. The departure of Casemiro has definitely made the squad significantly weaker but it still has the potential to win everything. The transfer window is still open but reports in Spain claim that Real Madrid will not make any panic buys or last minute bids unless it is a perfect fit of a player that the club has been following for a long time like Eduardo Camavinga who was signed last season.

Real Madrid have been handed a boost ahead of their trip to Espanyol as Rodrygo has started training with the team. The Brazilian missed the first two league games due to muscle overload but he is back now. Toni Kroos however is still ill and is likely to miss the game. Rodrygo came to Real Madrid in 2019 from Santos and was first registered with the B team. He broke into Zinedine Zidane's first team and scored a goal on his debut. There was a period when Rodrygo was one of the first names on the team sheet. He even scored a perfect hat-trick in the Champions League against Galatasaray but the winger slowly lost form and became a substitute. He scored important goals in the UCL matches against Chelsea and Manchester City last season but he never started any of those games.

This season could be a huge step for Rodrygo's development. Fede Valverde was the one who used to play on the right wing but now that Casemiro is gone, the Uruguayan could be used in midfield. Both Valverde and Carlo Ancelotti have said that midfield is his natural position and is better suited for him. Rodrygo will be fighting with Marco Asensio and Eden Hazard for a place on the right wing and the Brazilian has an upper hand. He has had impact in big games but consistency is something which he is lacking but this could be his season. Real Madrid have already shown confidence in him by not signing any other forward which was a gutsy move.
