Remaining IPL 2025 league games to have extra 120 minutes for rain interruptions

To ensure the completion of 20-over matches, the IPL has extended the additional time allowance for rain interruptions in the remaining nine league-phase games of the 2025 season to 120 minutes.

This two-hour extension was previously reserved only for playoff matches. The decision comes as the tournament resumes after a week-long suspension and with the onset of monsoon across India.

Of the nine remaining league matches, eight are evening games, while the Gujarat Titans-Chennai Super Kings match on May 25th is an afternoon fixture. With this new allowance, a full 20-over evening match can now start as late as 9:30 PM IST (from a regular completion time of 10:50 PM), and an afternoon game can begin as late as 5:30 PM IST (from a regular completion time of 6:50 PM). For a minimum five-over game, the cut-off times are 7:56 PM for afternoon matches and 11:56 PM for evening matches, including a 10-minute changeover.

So far in IPL 2025, three matches have been abandoned due to rain, leading to points being shared, and two other games have been shortened. The abandoned matches include Punjab Kings (PBKS) vs. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Kolkata, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) vs. Delhi Capitals (DC) in Hyderabad, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) vs. KKR in Bengaluru (which was the first match after the week-long suspension). PBKS defeated RCB in a shortened game, and Gujarat Titans (GT) secured a win against Mumbai Indians (MI) in a rain-affected match.

Due to a “yellow alert” for “heavy to very heavy rainfall” issued by the meteorological department in Bengaluru until Thursday, RCB’s final home game against SRH on May 23rd has been relocated to Lucknow.
