Maxwell assaulted the ball, smashing 21 fours and 10 sixes for a remarkable 201* to lead Australia to a thrilling three-wicket victory at the Wankhede Stadium just as the team was about to suffer a massive upset. When Maxwell came to bat, Australia was struggling at 49/4 in a 292-run chase, and when skipper Pat Cummins joined him, they were even worse, down to 91/7.

As the Australian captain employed his defending skills, Maxwell went on a rampage with the Afghan pace attack and utilized his innate aggression to lead Australia to a remarkable victory. After South Africa and India, the Australians’ victory made them the third side to qualify for the semi-finals. Australia’s first double-centurion:

The all-rounder from Australia became the 11th player in 50 overs of cricket to register a double century in an ODI, the first of its kind in the history of the format. Shane Watson set the previous mark of 185* against Bangladesh in 2011; Maxwell’s amazing performance eclipsed it. By the way, Watson’s knock also occurred during a World Cup game.

Highest individual score in a run-chase

In addition, Maxwell’s double century was the highest score ever recorded by a non-opener in the history of ODI cricket, surpassing Charles Coventry’s 194 against Bangladesh in 2009.

Additionally, Maxwell’s 201* was only the third time a double hundred has been scored in an ODI Cricket World Cup, following Martin Guptill’s 237 for New Zealand in 2015 and Chris Gayle’s 215 for the West Indies in 2015.

Second-fastest double ton in ODIs
