Real Madrid leave it late to beat Leipzig amidst lacklustre display

(Football news) Real Madrid kept their winning streak of the season going with a 2-0 win at home against RB Leipzig and they had to work mighty hard for it. Carlo Ancelotti started with David Alaba as left back with Nacho and Antonio Rudiger in the centre as Ferland Mendy dropped to the bench. Eden Hazard didn't get a single minute after his underwhelming display against Mallorca which seems a little harsh. Toni Kroos was rested for the game as Eduardo Camavinga got a start. Rodrygo started as a number 9 in the absence of Karim Benzema. Leipzig on the other hand started with Timo Werner, Christopher Nkunku and Dominik Szoboszlai up front with Emil Forsberg as a number 10.

The game in general was a little bit lacklustre and Leipzig looked like the team in control despite Real Madrid having more possession. The German side was very organised in defence and Los Blancos were struggling to break them down. The Merengues' had only 3 shots on target with the first one coming in the 72nd minute and the other two were goals. It was Fede Valverde who broke the deadlock in the 80th minute after being set up by Vinicius. This was the Uruguayan's 2nd goal in 2 games as he continues to be an important player for Ancelotti. Marco Asensio has been in the headlines as he was visibly angry when Carlo Ancelotti didn't substitute him in against Mallorca. The Italian manager made Asensio his first substitute and the Spaniard repaid his faith with a goal just before the full time whistle.

Real are now the only team in Europe's top 5 leagues to have won all their games. The performance however was a little lacklustre which is expected when Karim Benzema is missing and also when there is no other proper number 9 in the squad. Carlo Ancelotti has said that Benzema could play in the derby but if he doesn't then Los Blancos will have a problem. They will have to be much better than they were against Leipzig because Atletico Madrid have the ability to hurt them much more if they are not on their A game. It will be interesting to see what line-up Ancelotti selects for the Madrid derby as he has a lot of options.
