Real Madrid, Atletico and Barcelona all draw their penultimate games

(Football news) It was a rather interesting matchday in the La Liga as all of the big 3 dropped points. The results confirmed Barcelona and Real Madrid as the top two meaning that both will be in next year's Spanish Super Cup along with Real Betis and Valencia. Deportivo Alaves were confirmed as the 2nd team after Levante to get relegated. One of Cadiz, Mallorca and Granada will be relegated on the final matchday which is in a week's time.

Real Madrid travelled away to Cadiz in what was a very crucial fixture for the home side. The game presented a rare occurrence as brothers Alex Fernandez and Nacho Fernandez were the two captains. The reverse fixture ended in a goalless draw where Cadiz parked the bus like never before. This time, The Pirates brought the game to Los Blancos and showed intent from the very first minute. With Karim Benzema, Thibaut Courtois, Vinicius Jr and Luka Modric; Real Madrid were considerably weaker which was good news for Cadiz. Their early dominance ended when Rodrygo, playing on the left, stepped on the gas and went past several players before setting up Mariano who scored his first goal of the season. The hosts who were playing for survival found themselves behind after just 5 minutes.

Cadiz didn't drop their heads and continued to trouble the Real Madrid defence. They finally got their reward in the 37th minute as Ruben Sobrino equalised. In the 60th minute, Alvaro Negredo was brought down in the box by keeper Andriy Lunin and the referee pointed to the spot. Lunin redeemed himself by saving Negredo's shot, much to the dismay of the home fans. Cadiz had a lot of big chances to take the lead but couldn't find the back of the net. In absence of Courtois, Lunin put in an excellent performance for which he was awarded the man of the match award. The Ukrainian made 6 saves including the match deciding penalty save. Mallorca scored a 92nd minute winner against Rayo Vallecano to go ahead of Cadiz into safety. Now to survive the drop not only do Cadiz need to win their game against the already relegated Deportivo Alaves away from home, they also need Mallorca to drop points away at Osasuna.

Sevilla managed to hold Atletico Madrid to a draw as they secured their place in the UEFA Champions League next season. Luis Suarez started his last home game as an Atletico Madrid player alongside Antoine Griezmann. The game was pretty even at the start as both teams were a little cautious. The deadlock was broken in the 30th minute as Jose Gimenez leaped highest to head home Yannick Carrasco's corner. Sevilla had a few chances to equalise but none clear cut until the 74th minute after which Youssef En-Nesyri had two great chances to score with his head. The first header hit the side netting while the second one hit the crossbar. The Moroccan finally scored in the 85th minute which guaranteed Sevilla's top 4 spot. Had Sevilla not managed to get the draw their next game against Real Betis would've been a 'winner takes UCL spot' match.

Barcelona were held to a goalless stalemate away at Getafe. Riqui Puig started for the first time since 3rd January. Neither team had any clear cut chances. Memphis Depay who had just about reached full fitness after a long absence had to go off injured once again. It was another poor outing for Ferran Torres who after a good start has been underwhelming. The lacklustre performance is not good for the club even though their 2nd place has been secured. The Blaugrana need a few new signings but going by the rumours their dire financial situation will make it very difficult.
