(Football news) According to a Deloitte Money Study, 11 Premier League clubs make up the top 20 of the highest revenue generating football teams of the last two seasons. It was the first time in 26 years of the study that over 50% of teams belong to the same league with reigning champions of England Manchester City occupying the top spot making 731m euros (£619.1m), ahead of Real Madrid (713.8m euros). Liverpool finished third followed by Manchester United while Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal also made it to the top 10. Other Premier League clubs included West Ham, Leicester, Leeds, Everton and Newcastle.

In a 13% increase from the 2020-21 season, the top 20 clubs made 9.2bn euros (£7.82bn) collectively, largely because fans returned to the stadiums once again for a full season after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, resulting in a rise of matchday revenues from 111m euros to 1.4bn euros. The likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur saw their revenue increase by over 15%, amounting to a total increase of 226m euros. Commercial revenues also rose by 8% from 3.5bn euros to 3.8bn euros (£2.975bn to £3.23bn) while broadcast revenue dipped by 11% (485m euros/£412.25m).

The Premier League has firmly established itself as a financial powerhouse of world football and was the only European league amongst the top five to experience an increase in its media rights value during its most recent rights sale process. Interest from commercial partners, fans and investors are at an all time high, which has resulted in calls for greater distribution of the financial wealth of English clubs across the football system. It seems like only a matter of time before all 20 Premier League clubs are a part of the top 30 highest revenue generating clubs in the world.
